Sitting, Standing, or Height Adjustable Desks: Which One’s Right for You?

Posted by Johnny Pastos on

Choosing the right desk isn’t just about looks, it’s about how you use it every day. The way you sit, stand, type, or create all affects how your workspace feels and how your body responds to long hours. Whether you’re setting up a home office, studio, or shared workspace, the right desk can make a big difference to comfort, focus, and posture.

If you’re unsure which setup might suit you best, get in touch and we’ll happily talk through your options or help you plan a custom setup.

Sitting Desks

A sitting desk is the most traditional and familiar choice for home offices and workspaces. The standard height for most fixed desks is around 71–73cm, designed for average seated posture with a chair that supports your back and keeps your feet flat on the floor.

A real wood, handmade desk with solid, stable legs gives a naturally grounded feel. It’s quiet to work on, feels warmer than metal or laminate, and suits almost any type of workspace. A well-sized sitting desk is still the best option if most of your day involves writing, editing, or computer work where precise hand placement matters.

Sitting desks can also be paired with ergonomic accessories such as monitor risers or sliding keyboard trays, helping you maintain good posture without needing to stand.

Standing Desks

Standing desks have become popular for a reason. They encourage movement, improve circulation, and can reduce the strain that comes from sitting for long periods. For many people, alternating between sitting and standing helps maintain focus throughout the day.

A standing desk or sit stand (with height adjustable legs) desk can also be a cleaner, more flexible setup for shared spaces or creative work. Standing naturally opens your posture and makes it easier to collaborate, think on your feet, or switch between tasks.

However, a fully fixed standing desk doesn’t suit everyone. Standing all day can lead to fatigue, especially if your shoes or floor surface aren’t supportive. That’s where height adjustable desks come in, offering a balance between comfort and flexibility.

Height Adjustable Desks

A height adjustable desk offers the best of both worlds. With a smooth, powered mechanism, you can shift from sitting to standing in seconds, keeping your body moving and your workspace adaptable.

Our real wood height adjustable desks combine solid craftsmanship with ergonomic design. Each one is built from sustainably sourced pine and finished by hand, giving the warmth and texture of natural wood with the practicality of modern movement.

They’re ideal if your workday varies, whether you’re editing, sketching, or simply want to stand up for part of a meeting. You can save preferred height settings, making it easy to switch between different postures depending on what you’re doing.

Studio Desks

Studio desks are a bit more involved to choose from because of their two-tier layout. The lower tier holds your midi keyboard or synth, while the upper surface is for your typing keyboard and mouse. Above that, the monitor stand supports your speakers and screen, keeping everything aligned at a comfortable height for longer creative sessions.

For most setups, a 71cm frame works well, but many prefer a slightly lower base, around 60cm, to maintain comfort without losing legroom. Lowering the base keeps the top tier at a natural eye level, especially if you spend more time producing or mixing rather than playing. It all depends on your workflow and how you balance playing, editing, and general use.

Our Grafeio range covers all types of desks, including studio, office, and height adjustable designs. Every piece is fully customisable since we make everything to order. We can adjust leg height, add sliding keyboard trays, or modify dimensions to make sure your workspace feels balanced, ergonomic, and built around how you work.

Finding the Right Fit

There’s no single answer to which desk is best. Some people feel most focused sitting, others thrive when they can stand and move freely. Many prefer a flexible solution, using a height adjustable desk that shifts with them through the day. The important thing is how the desk supports your work physically and creatively.

If you’re furnishing a new home office, setting up a recording studio, or simply want a better workspace that fits your rhythm, we can help you get it right from the start.

At Pastos & Co, every desk is handmade to order from sustainably sourced real wood. Whether you need a fixed office desk, a height adjustable sit stand desk, or a custom studio desk with unique dimensions, get in touch and we’ll design it piece by piece around how you work.
